How much does WestClip cost?
WestClip stores and runs your query at no charge. If you designate your delivery format as List of All Citations, WestClip will send a citations list to any destination at no charge.
When WestClip retrieves documents and sends them to a preselected offline print destination, you are billed the same offline print charges as if you had run a search in the database and printed the documents offline. Actual charges depend on your subscription agreement and the database being searched.
For new documents found and viewed online, you will be billed the same charge you would have incurred if you had manually gone to that database, run a search and viewed the documents. Normally, the charge will be an hourly or transactional search charge, but the actual cost will depend on your subscription agreement and the database you were monitoring.
How can I control my WestClip costs?
Even though WestClip is a great value, there are a number of ways you can predict and control your WestClip costs.
- When you set up a WestClip entry, choose List of Citations, All Term Mode Pages or First Pages instead of All Pages. You can then review the citations list, only the pages where the terms appear or the first page of each document to determine if there are any documents that you want to read. You can then select the link to retrieve them.
- Use one WestClip entry to do double duty by monitoring different topics in the same database using the OR connector.
- West Reference Attorneys are available 24 hours a day at 1-800-REF-ATTY (1-800-733-2889) to help formulate WestClip queries.
Do accounts with special-offer price plans pay for WestClip?
If a WestClip entry runs in a database that is within an account's special offer, that account will not be charged directly for printing or viewing new documents. The usage, however, will be counted under the overall Westlaw usage of that account. If an entry is running in a database that is not within an account's special-offer plan, the account will be billed standard printing and viewing charges.
Do WestlawPRO subscribers pay for WestClip?
WestlawPRO subscribers will not be charged for viewing new documents if they are searching a database included in their plan. They will be charged standard viewing charges (online search or offline print) if searching a database that is not included in their plan.
What clipping services does Lexis have?
The Lexis clipping service is called Eclipse. The core function of both Eclipse and WestClip is identical - to run a Terms and Connectors query at a predefined frequency and send the result to a predefined destination. Eclipse pricing is structured similarly to that of WestClip, but Eclipse monitoring charges are higher than those for WestClip.

Is WestClip superior to Eclipse?
Yes, for a number of reasons.
- Cost. As shown above, WestClip is a significantly better value for monitoring most clip entries.
- Portability. WestClip is associated with a user's password. Westlaw subscribers can access the WestClip service and create, edit, delete and view new results from any Westlaw platform (e.g., WestMate, westlaw.com). Lexis users can only edit, delete or view an Eclipse entry in the platform in which it was created. So a Lexis user who creates an Eclipse clip entry using the Lexis proprietary software in the office cannot edit, delete or view new documents online from that clip entry at home if they are accessing Lexis via the Internet.
- Frequency. WestClip provides more monitoring frequencies than Eclipse, including the Continuous frequency for use in newswire databases such as those provided by Dow Jones Interactive that are critical for monitoring up-to-the-minute news stories.
- Setup. Lexis requires that you run a search before you can set up an Eclipse search. WestClip gives you the option of creating a WestClip entry without having to run a search beforehand, or of adding an existing search to your WestClip Directory.
- Delivery. Lexis software users must use a password different from their main password if they wish to have an Eclipse result delivered via fax or e-mail as opposed to attached printer, download to disk or stand-alone printer destinations. WestClip does not have this restriction. The e-mail and fax destinations, in addition to other destinations, are available for all WestClip entries set up with the user's main password.
When does WestClip incur a charge?
WestClip entries set to the Continuous frequency are charged $4.50 per entry per day.
